Reading Between the Lines: Broadside Ballads & Tune Notations
In Spring 2015 I was a research assistant for the English Broadside Ballad Archive at UCSB.
The inspiration for this small research project came from two prints of the same ballad I transcribed: one with a tune notation and one without. This got me thinking about the aspect of the tune notation and what it meant for these two prints. While there were five versions of this ballad printed with a tune they were not all musically correct (as in, the tune really made no sense). So there is an element of the tune being just decoration vs. being a functional part of the printed ballad.
